Penny Power Vintage April-May 1983 Consumer Reports 1980s Sneaker Testing magazine

Here’s a 1983 vintage Consumer Reports “Penny Power” magazine featuring articles on sneaker testing kids retro runners. This article compares Nike, adidas, Sears and Kinney NBA vintage sneakers.

Article info is below:

APRIL / MAY 1983 A Consumer Reports Publication for young People

PENNY POWER

TESTING SNEAKERS

Part Three: THE TESTS

In order to pick which brands to test, Penny Power used two kinds of "experts." First, an experienced runner looked at many pairs of running shoes sold in children's sizes, and told us which ones were sturdy and well made. Second, junior-high students weeded out the "dorky-looking" pairs from a group of good quality sneakers. They liked the four models you see in the "before" picture below. These ranged in price from $14 to $25.

Before

NIKE ($25)

KINNEY'S NBA ($20)

ADIDAS ($20)

SEARS ($14)

We decided to put these sneakers through the toughest test of all—a "kid" test. The 8-to-13-year-olds you see on these pages were each fitted with two different brands. All wore both pairs through an entire summer and into the fall. One pair was worn one day, the other pair the next day, so that each pair received the same amount of wear— at camp, on the beach and in the country. Running, jumping and skidding would show up differences among the sneakers, we thought. We were wrong! When we gathered in the 20 pairs of sneakers at the end of the test, a few were slightly shabbier or a bit more worn. But, as the "after" picture shows, most came through the test in about the same condition. One reason they were still in good shape was that the testers were switching between two different pairs. Changing your sneakers every day gives them a chance to dry out between wearings, and that's good for all shoes. It's also better for your feet. The testers were asked to choose the more comfortable of the two pairs they had worn. No one brand proved to be more comfortable than the others. Some testers liked one feature (such as the Sears's thinner sole or the NBA's cushioning), some another. We then washed a few pairs of each brand to see how well they would clean up. Again, all four brands washed pretty much the same. Only the light-colored sneakers were hard to get clean. The dark suede trim faded in the wash, however. (Turn to the back cover to see the results of our sneaker spruce-up.)

After

NIKE

ADIDAS

SEARS

KINNEY'S NBA

What did The Sneaker Project teach us? Since no brand stood out in durability or over-all comfort, you should look for a well-made model that fits your particular pair of feet. While you're looking, don't ignore some of the well-made but less-famous brands. Some of our testers were firm Nike or Adidas fans until they discovered the fit and comfort of a less-expensive brand. They were surprised. Maybe you will be too!

Brooks 1980 Super Villanova vintage running shoes ad

Here’s another 1980 vintage sneaker ad, this time for the Brooks 1980 Super Villanova running shoes.

Ad info is below:

LESS SHOE FOR YOUR MONEY.

The suggested list price of our new Super Villanova lightweight trainer is only $29.95. Now, a lot of training shoes sell for roughly that price. But the Super Villanova weighs in at a mere 270.3 grams in size 9. Which is pretty amazing, when you compare it with these other training shoes:

Shoe Weight Suggested Retail Price
Brooks Super Villanova 270.3g $29.95
Nike Daybreak 306.1g $42.95
Adidas Marathon Trainer 289.2g $39.90
Etonic Stabilizer
Osaga KT-26 326A8 327.7g $39.95 $39.95

Source October 1979, Runner, World

But just because the new Super Villanova is light, doesn't mean it's less comfortable. There's a mildly flared heel and a My/T/ Lite' midsole, which help to make the new Super Villanova comfortable and 10% more shock absorbent than it was before. The sole wears twice as long, too. That's because it's made of a new rubber compound called Brooks B-10, and it's triple reinforced at the critical heel strike point. (No wonder the Super Villanova earned a 5-Star Rating for 1980.)
MEN'S/WOMEN'S SUPER VILLANOVA

MEN'S SUPER VILLANOVA So if you're looking for a durable, lightweight training shoe at a reasonable price, try on the Brooks Super Villanova, It's a lot less shoe for the money.

Brooks Chariot 1983 vintage running shoe ad

Here’s an old 1983 vintage sneaker ad for the Brooks Chariot model runners.

Ad info is below:

Rock and roll might be good for your ears, but definitely not for your feet. Read how the new Brooks® Chariot helps control this curious problem.

Your muscles have a single job to do when you run. Move you forward. All runners, unfortunately, lose some of this forward motion the instant their foot strikes the ground. And it doesn't take a degree in medicine to figure out why. The force of heel strike sends shock waves in every direction. Much of this shock is absorbed by your shoe's cushioning. But a lot of it causes your foot to slip from side to side. Technically it's called lateral instability. We simply call it "rock and roll."

ROCK AND ROLL IS NOT HERE TO STAY
At Brooks® our commitment is to design running shoes that help you run faster, lose less energy and stay as injury free as possible. Shoes that aid the natural motion of the foot. And that means controlling the rock and roll that saps energy and leads to injuries. Such a shoe is the new Brooks® Chariot.

THE DIAGONAL ROLLBAR

With the Chariot, Brooks® introduces a totally new concept in controlling excessive motion. In the midsole area we have inserted the Diagonal Rollbar, a firmer material that increases in thickness from the outside of the shoe to the inside. It's thinner on the outside so the heel gets the cushioning it needs at heel strike. It becomes wider toward the inside of the shoe to prevent the foot from rolling too far inward or over pronating. Unlike other attempts to deal with this common problem, the Diagonal Rollbar does not throw up an inflexible barrier which might interfere with the natural motion of the foot. Rather, it provides a graduated increase that can be compared to the foot rolling up a hill. This unique solution maintains the foot in a neutral plane.

THE WINNING COMBINATION: STABILITY AND FLEXIBILITY

Along with the Diagonal Rollbar, the Chariot offers the runner a remarkable number of control and flexibility features. A few of these are: a heavy-duty heel counter that extends to the middle of the foot and is reinforced at the critical flex area where the counter joins the midsole; our exclusive Competition Last' is board lasted in the rear for stability, slip lasted up front for flexibility; a Tri-layer Footbed' system comfortably molds to the imprint of your foot after the first few runs; under it all is a new, lightweight outsole engineered for flexibility, traction and long-running wear on all types of surfaces. Let your feet experience just how good running can be in the Brooks® Chariot. It'll be music to their soles.

Ektelon 1988 vintage tennies ad

We usually post old school runners on the blog but thought I'd mix it up for today’s post. Here’s a vintage 1988 advertisement for Ektelon racquetball sneakers. According to Wikipedia This brand was founded in 1964 in San Diego after the invention of racquetball and was named Ektelon based on a combination of two Greek words: "ektein", meaning to stretch out, and "telon", representing the concept of perfection. They are now based out of New Jersey and since 1988 have been owned by Prince Sports. 🎾

Keds 1980 MILLENNIUM, OPEN-ROAD, BREAKTHRU, SEABREEZE, PROFILE and BREAKAWAY vintage sneaker ad

Here’s a 1980 vintage sneaker ad for the Keds Millenium, Open-Road, Breakthru, Seabreeze, Profile and Breakaway model running shoes. There’s a great description for Keds cutting edge technology in this ad:

The upper has a nylon mesh that's been computerized to place airvents in strategic positions.”

Also, the logo on these looks a lot like the Gallenkamp scats logo in the next ad below. 👇

Ad info is below:

KEDS.YOU BETTER BELIEVE IT.
WE BELIEVE THAT THE RENAISSANCE TRAINER FOR MEN AND THE PHOENIX FOR WOMEN ARE THE TWO BEST SHOES MADE.

Once you get a good look at them, you'll believe it too. And there's more. Many of these same features went into the design of our Millennium (Men's) and Seabreeze (Women's) trainers.

• Same replaceable Wear Plug System
• Same lightweight, durable, polyurethane midsole
• Same pre-molded external heel counter as Renaissance
• Suede toe-piece reinforcer for extra wear
• A new light-weave Dupont mesh upper
• 9 ounces (men's size 9).

Open Road (Men's) and Profile (Women's) round out the Keds training shoe revolution. They're lighter than most conventional training shoes yet provide an exceptionally durable outsole and shock absorbent midsole. And, we've also come up with incredibly light, high performance racing flats, The Breakthru (Men's) and Breakaway (Women's). The outsole is durable SBR rubber. The upper has a nylon mesh that's been computerized to place airvents in strategic positions. All this weighs just 5 ounces. Unbelievable. The new running shoes from Keds. Something to believe in. Converse Arizona 1980 vintage sneaker ad

Here's an old school 1980 vintage sneaker ad for the Converse Arizona. According to the ad they teamed up with a NASA engineer to help design it and this sneaker is loaded with tech for traction, shock absorption and stability.

Converse Arizona 1980 vintage sneaker ad @ The Deffest

Ad info is below:

HIGH TECH OR YOUR FEET THE CONVERSE ARIZONA

The new Converse Arizona' was developed in consultation with a NASA contractor. The result is an Integrated Running System (patents pending) that offers runners new levels of stability, shock protection, and traction on every surface.

The Sportcell mid-sole, created from a new high-technology material, provides extra protection by actually dissipating shock. Converse took the question of sole configuration out of the hands of clothing designers, and put it into the hands of engineers. The result is a sole that grabs hold of virtually anything —even loose dirt — to provide solid footing on any surface. The Toe Propulsion Ridge maximizes traction on toeoff. Outsole Studs and Heel Wear Bar keep traction high even as the shoe wears. The Heel Lock System provides state-of-the-art stability. When the shoe is laced, this newly developed "passive seatbelt system" locks the heel into place. This means over-pronation, the leading cause of runners' injuries, is minimized.

Man's feet, his legs, his knees — all his body parts are limited. His mind is not. He can create high technology to compensate for his limitations —technology to help him run faster, safer, more comfortably. He can create the Converse Arizona.
