You've heard of braun-bilt
Whenever American shoe manufacturers discuss quality, you're liable to hear the name "braun-bilt" whispered in envious tones. Braun-bilt runners are designed and built the way every shoe should be. We design and build more shoes for athletes than anyone else in the U.S. (You've seen our name on RW's "Best Companies" listing).

RW says weight and fit are important. We said we wanted even more. So we challenged our 600 master-craftsmen to produce a runner for the American foot that met or exceeded the standards of every feature the experts deemed "most important." And produce they did. The new braun-bilt has been inspected to the point of exasperation. 21 different ways. And it passed every test with flying colors.

The imported mystique

We've all grown up with imported products, some of them truly exceptional. Japanese electronics. German automobiles. English scotch. But don't let anybody give you the run-around when it comes to shoes. 'Made in America" is still the world's standard of excellence. Braun-bilt can turn you into a world champion, It's a quality runner, and will conquer time and distance comfortably. So get a kick out of running... slip into a braun-hilt.

1988 Vintage sneaker ad for the Turntec Road Warrior

Jumping to the late 80s for a minute here’s a 1988 vintage sneaker ad for the Turntec Road Warrior runners with Z0 2 technology.. Jerry Turner developed most of the classic Brooks brand running shoes.

Ad info is below:

"Stop taking abuse. ” Jerry Turner

Slam, bang, bang. It's positively abusive— the punishment your feet take when you run. So, when an advanced cushioning material comes along, you'd want it right against your foot where it will do the most good. That's why I've put my new ZO2 in the sock liner of my next generation running shoe, the Road Warrior.

Unlike gel or air, ZO2 is not buried in the midsole. In fact, it lines my famous Anatomical Cradle. It's my new ZO2 insert—right against your heel where it can absorb the most shock.

And then there's the Cradle itself. It's scooped out of the heel area of the midsole —so your foot rests in the midsole, not on it.

The results? More stability because the Cradle keeps your foot from moving inside the shoe. Better cushioning because it concentrates your heel's natural padding where it can work best.

I've even added my newly developed Poly-Lite midsole. The lightest polyurethane midsole material available to date! It is as light as E.V.A. but vastly superior in shock attenuation and durability. So check out my new Road Warrior where you buy athletic shoes. And forget about the abuse of running. In the Road Warrior, you won't have to take it anymore.

My Anatomical Cradle" is scooped out of the midsole so your foot rests in it, not on it, for more stability. And it improves cushioning by concentrating your heel's natural padding where it works best.

Z02 insert, effective cushioning where it does the most good: right against your heel.

New Balance 1982 vintage sneaker ad 'Runners aren't normal'

By special request today we've got a 1982 vintage ad for New Balance featuring the 375/376, 390, 420, 555, 660, 730, 990, and Comps models. I’d be curious to see what’s going down in the New Balance “gait lab” these days.

Ad info is below:

Runners aren't normal.

It’s not that we're crazy. It's just that we're, well ... different. In fact, there's not a typical or average one of us in the whole bunch. And the bunch now numbers some 25,000,000 people.

Imagine: 25 million runners, each with a different running style, training pattem, lifestyle. A different physical construction and emotional make-up. A 'different level of commitment to the sport. And each given these other variables, with different needs. Needs the New Balance Running Shoe System is designed to satisfy.

A SHOE FOR EVERY RUNNER.

The New Balance Running Shoe System is the product of our on-going efforts to better understand the relationship between running and the human body. It has come about through our involvement in three specific areas:

Sports medicine. Through association with orthopedists, podiatrists and the gait lab of one of Boston's leading hospitals.

Manufacturing technology. The key to our ability to be technologically innovative.

Runners themselves. World-class athletes like Dick Beardsley, Kevin Ryan, Lorraine Moller and Francie Larrieu. The result is a system of running shoes that accommodates variations in weight, size, gait, speed, agility and more. And enables individual runners to "match" their personal styles and preferences to performance footwear designed to meet their needs. We even make our shoes in different widths. So that no one has to run in shoes designed to fit someone else.

THE INDIVIDUAL SHOES.

This will briefly introduce you to the shoes in the System. Naturally, you can find out more about them first-hand at better athletic footwear stores. The 375/376. Excellent values, the NB 375 and 376 for women are impressive examples of what we're able to accomplish within strict economic limits. With all-leather side supports and an extended sway bar tip for superior control, they offer more performance features than any other $35 running shoes. The 390. A reasonably priced training shoe, the 390 is equally at home on the road or trail. The key to its versatility is its outersole—a New Balance-exclusive carbon rub-ber houndstooth outersole, anatomi-cally contoured for exceptional wear.

The 420/420 W. The NB 420 is the single biggest selling running shoe in Amenca above $40, and comfort is the reason. With its EVA wedge and midsole, Vibram® Morflex outersole and Lunaris Pillow footbed, the 420 offers a level of comfort that's simply without parallel.

The 555/555 W. A shoe designed specifically for people who are murder on running shoes, or who do their running in areas that are rough on shoes, the 555 is our most durable training shoe. It's also extremely versatile—thanks in part to a carbon rubber houndstooth sole and combination-lasting construction.

The 660/660 W. Light and firm, the NB 660 is designed for runners who like to feel the road when they run. Factors contributing to its firmer feel are a Fethalite wedge and mid-sole, a firm version of our Lunaris Pillow and a double-extended 60-weight Surlyn counter.

The 730/730 W. An impressive combination of comfort and stability, the NB 730 is designed for runners who seek a stable, but for-giving, training shoe. Three different materials in the sole unit—an EVA midsole, high density EVA wedge and Morflex outersole—combine to make this the most cushioned run-ning shoe on the road today. The 990. More than three years in the making, the NB 990 is the most technologically advanced running shoe on the market today. No other training shoe ever built offers a more thoroughly sophisticated combination o protection, comfort and motion control—achieved with-out the slightest inhibition of the foot's natural range of motion. Comps. Our Spike 100, Spike 200 and Comp 200 racing shoes are designed with three criteria in mind—minimal weight, optimum protection, maximum feel of the road or track The results are apparent in race results throughout the world. IF YOU'D LIKE TO READ MORE, WRITE US. We'll send you a brochure describing in greater detail the New Balance Running Shoe System. A System that by satisfying the needs of all different kinds of runners makes New Balance different, too. New Balance Athletic Shoe, Inc., 38 Everett St., Boston, MA 02134.

Nothing protects this equipment, quite like this equipment.

You don't have bats, racquets, clubs, gloves, nets or goal posts. For a runner, the equipment list is simple: your body and your shoes. And it's no secret that the right shoe can make a difference as to how the rest of your equipment will function.

That's why we build so much protection into Etonic/km running shoes. We start with the Dr. Rob Roy McGregor' one-piece heel/arch support.* This unique device encourages a more rounded heel, gently forcing your natural padding under the foot to provide its own cushioning. So your foot acts as a natural shock absorber, helping the rest of your body to withstand the continuous jarring inherent in long distance running.

Etonic/km also incorporates a flared heel for greater stability, a sturdy heel counter for increased support, a high, wide toe box to min-imize toe irritations and many other highly protective features. All available for men and women in our tough, lightweight Street Fighters and the highly acclaimed Km-501. Protect your body in

Vintage Converse 1979 ad for the World Class Trainer II, World Class Marathoner II and Invitational

We had someone email the blog to ID some 1970’s Converse today and I was able to dig up a 1979 ad for them. They had the World Class Trainer II and this ad also features the World Class Marathoner II and World Class Invitational.

Ad info is below:

CONVERSE INVITES YOU TO COMMIT YOURSELF.

Buy a pair of Converse World Class Running Shoes and get this one-of-a-kind Progress Plan free.

The final step to serious running is serious self-appraisal. If you are ready for that step, or if you have already taken it but don't have a day-to-day system, we would like to present you with a unique opportunity.

We have put together The World Class Progress Plan. It features the most comprehensive personal logs ever compiled, complete before-and-after stretching instructions by Bob Anderson: author of the book Stretching, and an introduction explaining the value of self-appraisal by Rory Donaldson, editor of Guidelines For Successful Jogging.

To get The World Class Progress Plan first buy either the Trainer II, the Marathoner II or the Invitational. The Trainer II and the Marathoner II are the only shoes that offer the unique combination of lace-to-toe design and variable width sizing to insure proper shoe fit. The result: a more even distribution of stress and a more comfortable shoe.

The Invitational is in a class by itself. No other shoe gives you a combination of rolled outersole and flared heel. The result: maximum stability on uneven surfaces.

These shoes were rated in the 1979 Runner's World shoe survey. The Trainer II and Invitational were awarded the highest five-star ratings while the Marathoner II earned a full four-stars. So if you are ready to make the commitment to serious running, commit yourself to a pair of Converse World Class Running Shoes. Vintage Converse Arizona sneaker ad from 1980

Here’s an old 1980 Converse ad for the Arizona model runners. If you want to learn more we previously posted another ad for this model here.

Ad info is below:

INTRODUCING THE PERFECT SHOE FOR AN IMPERFECT WORLD. THE NEW CONVERSE ARIZONA:
Wherever you run, there's a surface out to get you...hard, unyielding pavement; rough, uneven dirt; soft, unpredictable turf. The pounding, twisting punishment you absorb on these surfaces is incredible. Now, Converse has a shoe that puts the odds in your favor.

The Converse Arizona, A Totally Integrated Running System
At Converse we believe that a high-performance training shoe should combine stability, shock absorption and traction. The Arizona features an Integrated Running System* engineered with precisely this in mind.

Stability
Over-pronation, the leading cause of runners' injuries, is minimized through the unique Heel Lock System', which wraps the counter snugly around the heel and literally locks it in place. This feature combined with a rein-forced nylon mesh upper and molded insole provides a degree of stability you just can't get in any other shoe.

Shock Absorption
Hard surfaces shouldn't be hard on your legs. That's why the Arizona features a midsole layer of Sport Cell', a highly shock absorbent material designed exclusively for Converse. This substance not only dissipates the initial impact of heel-strike, but also effectively directs residual shock out the side of the sole.

Superior Traction — On Every Surface
Because man does not run on pavement alone, the new Arizona is designed with extra traction features. Our Toe Propulsion Ridge maximizes traction on toeoff. The scientifically designed outsole studs reinforce critical wear areas... a must for all-surface running. And our Heel Wear Bar reinforces the primary impact area... helping the Arizona, and you, last miles longer. Converse believes all these features work together to make the Arizona a fast, safe, comfortable training shoe over any surface. Whether you run on the pavement, through the park, or on country roads, we're confident that the new Arizona will make a good hard run easier on your legs.
