Etonic Eclipse Racer and Trainer vintage sneakers from 1981

Today we've got a vintage ad post for the 1981 Etonic Eclipse Racer and Trainer sneakers. These both featured the advanced generation Dr. Rob Roy McGregor® foot cradle and will "help you eclipse your best racing time."

Advertisement info is below:

TOTAL ECLIPSE

Etonic Eclipse Racer
The lightweight, flexible performer to help you eclipse your best racing time. A new, anatomically designed last gives a closer fit at the heel and shank for greater rear-foot control and toe-off. Weighing just 7 oz. in size 9, the Eclipse Racer offers cool, comfortable running with our upper of breathable oximesh nylon laminated to a foam and perforated nylon tricot. A. sole made of dual rubber compound with two distinct treads provides added cushioning, durability and traction. Add the Dr. Rob Roy McGregor® foot cradle* and the Etonic rear-foot lacing system* and you've got the support, control and stability racing demands.

Without foot cradle heels are flat.

With it, they are rounded and cushioned.

Etonic Eclipse Trainer
The tough training shoe that performs like a racing flat. It's got the same first name as our racing flat because of so many of the same performance features. It's designed on the racing flat last, has the identical comfortable, lightweight upper and is remarkably light (8.3 oz. in size 9). But it's still a trainer; so we made it tougher. We've got a microcellular blown rubber sole for lightweight cushioning, and a special heel-strike insert that adds rugged durability where it's needed. The advanced generation Dr. Rob Roy McGregor® foot cradle* is designed to absorb the force of heel-strike as well as shearing and lateral forces. And the rear-foot lacing system* allows for a fit the runner can adjust to his own liking.

Late 70s Saucony Gripper vintage sneaker ad

We’re closing out the Saucony ads with another old school vintage ad for the Saucony Gripper sneakers from around 77-78.

Ad info is below:

When Greg Yutko gets into The Gripper, he has everything going for him except the big-name price tag.

Greg Yutko is a serious runner. He runs 15 miles every day, participates in over 30 long-distance road races and 4 marathon events every year. His training shoe is The Gripper by Saucony.

"Try it on and you'll see," says Greg. He likes The Gripper for its soft, comfortably padded interior, and nylon uppers that breathe. The exclusive Saucony Studsole and shock-absorbing heel wedge combine to minimize knee stress and lower leg strain.

As proprietor of Greg's Running Shop in St. Clair, Pa., he rates The Gripper superior to the big-name models. "Because I train in it myself, I can sell it with confidence to the serious runner." He likes the low price, too. "Any runner can afford it." Look for The Gripper at your running shop or sporting goods store.

Medalist Brand 1978 vintage track suit ad

1978... the year you took psychedelic magic mushrooms and watched your granny run a marathon at midnight. 🍄🤣 This advertisement is for Medalist brand track suits and running shoes of Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. One thing about mining through these old school magazines and catalogs is you see advertising trends that appear over and over again. Back in the late 70s and early 80s everyone was using this running "speed trails" photography effect to illustrate blazing fast quickness. Other than that apparently Elvis Presley wore Medalist brand.

Point 4 vintage running shoes ad from 1975

Today we've got an old school vintage sneaker ad from 1975 for Point 4 brand sneakers. I had someone send an email into the blog recently about this brand and he mentioned that the person who designed the shoe attended Bowling Green State University. (Thanks for the info Rich.) I'm going to dig further on this brand but according to the LetsRun forum boards the logo was designed by Emerson Hallenbeck III.

If you want to see another .4 ad we posted one here.

Tough leather uppers help equip this shoe with all the necessities for long distance training. The soles propel the runner toward his goal by providing positive forward traction. This shoe is just like the people it's named after—rugged, dependable and able to bounce back after an exhausting challenge.

sting (Top middle)

A marathon runner needs all the help he can get to withstand this particularly grueling race. STING is specially designed as a racing marathon shoe. It gives the athlete DENYAFOUR nylon uppers and a tough sole that supports his feet over any terrain during the long, brutal races.

moscow '80 (Bottom middle)

This shoe is constructed of DENYA-FOUR fiber and is designed to reduce leg injuries with its nylon heel counter that's joined to a soft midsole and wedge. The M-'80 gives extra toe and metatorsal area and has a tough wearing sole. This footwear allows the athlete to attack his training in comfort.

comfort plus (right)

The comfort of the athlete was in mind when this shoe was designed. It has DENYAFOUR uppers and features a rounded toe for added room. Suede reinforcement gives needed support to problem areas and long wearing gum soles provide positive forward traction when it's most needed.

Onitsuka Tiger Montreal '76 vintage sneaker ad

Here's an old school late 1975 vintage sneaker ad for the Onitsuka Tiger Montreal '76 runner sporting the "heel lock" heel counter. What's odd about these sneakers is that Onitsuka Tiger has re-issued a shoe called the 'Montreal' but it has a slightly different style than this one. These closely resemble the Corsair.

Converse Arizona 1980 vintage sneaker ad

Here's an old school 1980 vintage sneaker ad for the Converse Arizona. According to the ad they teamed up with a NASA engineer to help design it and this sneaker is loaded with tech for traction, shock absorption and stability.

Converse Arizona 1980 vintage sneaker ad @ The Deffest

Ad info is below:

HIGH TECH OR YOUR FEET THE CONVERSE ARIZONA

The new Converse Arizona' was developed in consultation with a NASA contractor. The result is an Integrated Running System (patents pending) that offers runners new levels of stability, shock protection, and traction on every surface.

The Sportcell mid-sole, created from a new high-technology material, provides extra protection by actually dissipating shock. Converse took the question of sole configuration out of the hands of clothing designers, and put it into the hands of engineers. The result is a sole that grabs hold of virtually anything —even loose dirt — to provide solid footing on any surface. The Toe Propulsion Ridge maximizes traction on toeoff. Outsole Studs and Heel Wear Bar keep traction high even as the shoe wears. The Heel Lock System provides state-of-the-art stability. When the shoe is laced, this newly developed "passive seatbelt system" locks the heel into place. This means over-pronation, the leading cause of runners' injuries, is minimized.

Man's feet, his legs, his knees — all his body parts are limited. His mind is not. He can create high technology to compensate for his limitations —technology to help him run faster, safer, more comfortably. He can create the Converse Arizona. 👟 Fast Rider

👟 Lite Rider

👟 Track Rider

Puma produces running shoes that are clearly superior. The sport's largest publication agrees.

"If one company can be singled out for its advances in a year, it would have to be Puma ... Puma has been doing its homework:. wrote Runner's World Magazine in its 1980 Shoe Survey issue.

Runner's World gave 5-Star Ratings to the following Puma running shoes:

Fast Rider: This new men's trainer weighs only 278.7 grams. A revolutionary development, the Federbein sole, features studs arranged in inverted "V" patterns that spread to cushion impact. It's one of the most com-fortable shoes Puma has ever produced.

Lite Rider: Built for racing, this shoe offers good impact protec-tion front and rear plus excellent sole wear. Removable and wash-able insoles form to your feet.

Track Rider: Slip-last construc-tion makes this trainer-racer fit like a glove, while micro-soft rubber midsoles and the new Federbein sole combine for an excellent ride. This shoe ranked 1st in sole wear among men's racing flats.

The rest of the shoes in Puma's new running line are crafted with the same deliberate care and workmanship because Puma builds quality—and always will.

Tred 2 vintage running shoe repair ad from 1978

Here’s an 1978 running shoe repair ad for Tred 2. I tried to search around for a company that does this today and unfortunately there aren't many out there. Seems like a sustainable "green" idea that might have been ahead of its time. Tred 2 eventually pivoted over from rebuilding other brands sneakers and later went on to create their own line of running shoes. If you want to see a couple of their sneaker ads they are here and here.

Tred 2 vintage running shoe repair ad from 1978 @ The Deffest

Ad info is below:

How to get a longer, safer run for your money.

Take good care of your running shoes; they'll give you more mileage and better support. And for even longer life, Tred 2 will rebuild them—at about half the cost of a new pair.

Clean by hand only; machine washing severely weakens stitching. When Tred 2 rebuilds your shoes, we reinforce broken stitching and repair cracks and tears.

Don't play tennis in running shoes; the toes aren't built to take it. They'll quickly wear right through the outer sole.'

Shoes wear down inside, too—reducing comfort, support and safety. Tred 2's rebuilding includes brand new insoles and arch supports. New shoelaces, too.

For proper heel elevation and injury-free running, never let your shoes wear down into the midsole. Run with a second pair while Tred 2 rebuilds your first, with a brand new outer sole that will outlast the original.

Tred 2 rebuilds running shoes for $14.95.

Enclosed are pairs for rebuilding at $14.95 each, plus $1.50 per pair for postage and handling. I've enclosed ❑ check, ❑ money order. Please charge my: ❑ BankAmericard, ❑ Mastercharge.
